As if one meat scare wasn’t enough, the Irish Government has just announced that they have found high levels of Dioxin in Beef. Unlike the Pork scare, they insist that they will not be pulling any meats off the shelves just yet. which hardly inspires confidence that people should be eating it. One can assume that through all this the consumer confidence in Irish Products is heading down the same route as Britain, which is quite scary and would lead one to assume that this could have been handled differently. Anyway, apparently it is still alright to eat Irish Beef, but not Pork just yet.

As of today, the 8th of Decemeber, Irish Pork is apparently not safe to eat. Here is one statement that was released from the Food Authority -

Laboratory results of animal feed and pork fat samples obtained yesterday (6 December) have confirmed the presence of dioxins. The food industry is therefore required to recall from the market all Irish (Republic) pork products produced from pigs slaughtered in Ireland. This includes all raw and cooked pork products e.g. pork, ham, sausages, bacon, gamon steaks etc.

Even though it is illegal for dioxins to be present in foodstuffs, any possible risk to consumer health is extremely low and consumers should not be concerned.

From my experience Ireland can be a pretty crazy place to be, especially late at night in Dublin or Limerick. Here are a few pointers -

If you are going out in Dublin at night, please be VERY careful. Grafton Street and the main streets on the Southside are generally alright, but do not go strolling down lanes thinking you are in the land of the leprechauns.

In Temple Bar and all along O Connoll Street it can be pretty dangerous at night. (some would say very). Dublin is not like Berlin or Paris, it has a late night edge to it that can lead to a real disaster. There is an estimated 15,000 Heroin addicts in Dublin. You can get mugged and you can get beaten -it happens all the time.

Get a Taxi Home - FULL STOP.

Do not get into an argument, no matter how right you may be. This can lead to the other person taking it personally. Do not get vexed with the Doormen on the nightclubs - no matter how much they piss you off.

Limerick and Cork are much safer than Dublin, but one still needs to be careful. The main trouble happens after 1 am, so, if you can, do not go strolling around, especially on a Friday and Saturday night.

Go into the bars that are clearly modern and popular. Drinking in small bars where where everyone knows everyone can lead to people wondering 'who the hell is this guy'?

In general, be aware that Friday and Saturday nights in Ireland are for the wild west fraternity. Most of the time one goes out, has a good time, gets home and laughs about it the next day. Sometimes it doesn't work out so well.

Part Celtic bard, part soulster, and part ecstatically scatting mystical visionary, Van Morrison is a painfully introverted figure who rarely gives interviews and is often at a loss to explain his own lyrics. In the studio, Van Morrison can sing like a soul man getting the spirit; onstage, however, his brilliance can be undercut by whim or temper, and he has upon occasion alienated audiences by rushing through songs and remaining aloof between them. Nonetheless, his influence among rock singer/songwriters is unrivaled by any living artist outside of that other prickly legend, Bob Dylan. Echoes of Morrison's rugged literateness and his gruff, feverishly emotive vocal style can be heard in latter-day icons ranging from Bruce Springsteen to Elvis Costello, while the Irish artist's own restless muse has kept him prolific and engaging through the '90s.

All private Bank accounts in Ireland are insured. If one has been looking at any newspaper they would have noticed that Ireland was the first to do so. I am not one to be giving any advice, but what I would say is to SPEAK TO YOUR BANK. It will not mean that they will tell you the truth, but at least you can make an informed decision of some sort. Because there are so many different account types, including ones linked to the stock market, it is imperative you feel that your money is safe.
