Hidden Gems of Kerry - Must See Places

Filed under: Kerry - Vacations, Killarney - Vacations, Uncategorized — admin @ 2:29 pm

There are so many places to see in Kenmare, the town itself is your typical small town, except it is far more secluded and wild than most. On the downside, nothing in the centre of Kenmare town gives on that WOW factor. (Unless you’re a builder after just selling another tiny, badly built holiday home). It is also too expensive, even by the Ring of Kerry standards.

I suggest you get a fishing rod from somewhere(you should already have one) drive out towards Glengarriff. Passing over a bridge, take a sharp right towards Toosist. Drive out the road about 7 miles (There is a few pubs along the way for fear of thirst). When you get to the site of the old Toosist Post-Office, take an immediate right turn and drive down a very, very narrow road about 4 miles, until a good 400 foot drop is the only thing separating you from the ocean foam. There are various car parks, and a few abundant fishing spots located here, one of which is at the site of the first major car park you will hit. Park the car, go back about 150 Meters and there are some steep pathways down to the rocks(Be careful).

Right here, on this spot is the easiest fishing place in the world. All you need is a large weight, a feather, and a nice thick rod. Fling it out as far as possible, leaving it drop to the bottom. As it drops, every two seconds pull it up about five feet, then down again. Once it drops, do the same, reel her in 5 feet, let it drop, reel her in 5 feet, let it drop. I can almost guarantee you will catch a Mackerel, Congor Eel(They bite) or Pollock, especially in April/May or September/October.

If you drive on, look around or ask a local for some tips. The area is alive with stone circles, alignments and Gallauns. There are a number of Martello towers and Ogham stones, one of which is the largest in the world. In my own opinion one of the best views in the whole of Ireland is right in front of your eyes.

Scenes Drives Ireland

Lets go on a tour from Killarney to the Border of Limerick, except this time lets take the Long, Long way to Crag Caves.

START FROM KILLARNEY
Take the Park Road out of Killarney, as far as the Cork road roundabout, then take a left instead of heading out to Cork. You should be driving up a hill, taking a left turn at the top, out towards Spa. Drive 3 Miles up that road, till you meet a fork on the road, take the left road all the ways to Gneevguilla. You are now in real Irish Countryside. I would suggest a quick stop off at Mcarthys shop for an Ice Cream and a walk around the village to steady your nerves. Carry on straight(If thats what you could call it) towards Ballydesmond. This road is very narrow, so be careful. Once you get to Ballydesmond, I suggest a stop off to see the Nora Herlihy Park GAA pitch, one of only two GAA grounds named after women in Ireland. The river blackwater also runs through here, but I have never fished her, so I wouldn’t feel experienced enough to give advice. Getting back into your car, carry on the long and winding road towards Castleisland town, where there is basically nothing but fields, rivers, hills and green things. Once you get to Castleisland, stop off and have lunch in one of the pubs there. You’ll get a meal for about 8 euros or less. Then drive out the main Limerick road about 4 Miles and you should see a sign for Crag Caves. If youwant to see them carry on, if not, park into the rest stop that is located about 1 Mile down the Limerick Road (Do not turn your car on this road). Its not Muckross House or The Giants Causeway, but its a part of Ireland few tourists see.
