Winter Holidays in Ireland - Best Holiday Destinations

Filed under: Ireland - General — admin @ 3:20 am

Well, I have spent many a Christmas and Winter travelling throughout Ireland, where the rain can take paint off a wall and the wind can put a small like flying like a bird. If Snow and Santa Claus is what you are looking for in Ireland, then you are going to be very disappointed. I am going to do my usual trick and simply list the 5 best places for a Winter Holiday in Ireland. Check the rest of the site to find out more. There is tons of information to be had.

GALWAY

Galway is the best place for a WINTER HOLIDAY IN IRELAND because it has much to offer in regards to festivity, culture, nature and all the different slants to an Irish Winter Experience. If one gets bored of the city, they can always hit Clifden Town or the amazing Cliffs of Moher. There are some great shops in Galway and the pub scene, especially during the Christmas period is second-to-none. The Quays Bar as well as any on Quay street can get one going fast.

KILKENNY

Accommodation is relatively cheap. One is only 2 hours(Max) from Dublin. The city itself is small but if itÕs a relaxing Christmas break one is after, then Kilkenny might be a good option. There is also an abundance of 5 star hotels with spas, leisure facilities and some amazing Golf Courses.

DINGLE

If you really want to get away from it all, see some amazing beauty and sit around an open fire while drinking a pint of sour Guinness, then this is the place to be. The Sea air during winter gives one some serious food for thought. Dingle is amazing any time of year, but especially during Christmas. A walk down a sandy beach on Christmas day is a moment to cherish.

DUBLIN

It would be ludicrous of me not to write Dublin on the list. As shopping goes, this is as good as it gets in Ireland. Some great Value deals on Hotels and once St. Stephens Day appears itÕs around the clock party time until the 2nd of June.

BELFAST

Again, one I had to mention. Belfast has far more chance of getting snow than Dingle. The shopping is up there with Dublin and the nightlife is just as good, and some would say better. The British Pound is worth absolutely nothing at present so there are a load of good deals to be had, especially if one is from USA.

Safety tips when Visiting Ireland

From my experience Ireland can be a pretty crazy place to be, especially late at night in Dublin or Limerick. Here are a few safety tips - if you are going out in Dublin at night, please be VERY careful. Grafton Street and the main streets on the Southside are generally all right, but do not go strolling down lanes thinking you are in the land of the leprechauns.

In Temple Bar and all along O Connoll Street it can be pretty dangerous at night. (some would say very). Dublin is not like Berlin or Paris, it has a late night edge to it that can lead to a real disaster. There is an estimated 15,000 Heroin addicts in Dublin. You can get mugged and you can get beaten - it happens all the time. If you don’t find yourself lost at night in and around Dublin, get a Taxi Home - FULL STOP. Do not get into an argument, no matter how right you may be Ð it is so not worth it. Irish Arguments can lead to the other Irish person taking it personally. Do not get vexed with the Doormen on the Night clubs - no matter how much they piss you off Ð they are already pissed off. Most of them were born that way.

Limerick and Cork are much safer than Dublin, but one still needs to be careful when wandering the streets. The main trouble happens after 1 am, so, if you can, do not go strolling around, especially on a Friday and Saturday night. Go into the bars that are clearly modern and popular to avoid going into a drinking establishment you may not be welcome in. Drinking in small bars where where everyone knows everyone can lead to people wondering ‘who the hell is this guy’? Staying Safe in Dublin, Cork, Limerick or any other Irish city is all about keeping to the rules and not being a fool. In general, be aware that Friday and Saturday nights in Ireland are for the wild west fraternity. Most of the time one goes out, has a good time, gets home and laughs about it the next day. Sometimes it doesn’t work out so well.
