Medical Insurance and Healthcare in Ireland

So, Healthcare and Medical issues are always an issue when one visits any country, whether it be on Holidays or longer. Ireland is pretty good when it comes to general Healthcare (Local Doctors etc) but one can get shocked at the Q’s in some of the local Doctor’s Offices.

Hospitals outside the major citiies and towns are shockingly under-staffed - so get prepared for long waits. If you are going abroad from Ireland or are an EU Citizen visiting Ireland on a short stay (e.g. on holiday), you should obtain a European Health Insurance Card (previously known as an E111 form).

This will ensure you will be covered under any emergency(Including Dental) Medical insurance is limited to two major players Quinn and VHI. There are some other companies but they are generally a waste of time if one is looking for proper medical cover. Unlike alot of EU Countries(and for that matter the USA), pretty strong pain-killers can be obtained direct from the Pharmacy(or Apotheke in German), if the medical condition isn’t too serious, this might solve your problems.

P.S
The Emergency number for all Medical and other emergencies is - 999

How to make an Irish Coffee - The Proper Way

Filed under: Health and Fitness - Ireland — admin @ 6:17 pm

First off, it is traditional in Ireland to make Irish Coffee after one is completely drunk - to do it beforehand is not the ‘In’ thing to do. Irish people do not sit around all day drinking Irish Coffee - in fact most Irish people would consider black tea to be their drink of choice(although many yuppies are doing their best to change this fact). Anyway, this is all you need -

Couple of shots of whiskey(or more if you want)
Sugar(I Teaspoon should be enough)
Freshly made coffee - Instant or not(you wont be tasting it)
Whipped Cream.

Gently warm an Irish Whiskey/Coffee glass in hot water. Pour whiskey and sugar into the glass and stir. Add the fresh made coffee filling the glass to within half an inch or so of the top. Pour the cream onto the top of the mixture gently using the back of a spoon to prevent splashing. Do not stir. Add grated chocolate to the top if required.
