Ireland Medieval Castles - Macroom

If its Castles and Culture you are after, then spend an hour or two here - then go yonder somewhere down West Cork Direction. You have Cork and Killarney within a 20-30 minute drive of you, so dont waste too much time thinking about the Kings of yesteryear.

MACROOM CASTLE - RUNDOWN
Probably dating from the reign of King JohN(a long long time ago). The Castle has had an interesting history, passing from mad King to madder King over the even madder last 500 years. In the 17th century, the castle was lost to Cromwell, who gave it as reward to Admiral William Penn. His son, also William Penn went on to found the state of Pennsylvania in America.

Today, the castle arch in the town leads to the Castle grounds, with their picturesque wooded riverside walks. Across from the Castle you have the Castle Hotel, which is a great place for a nice feed, especially on a Sunday. This is where the locals go to eat and its worth it. Last time I was there the Hotel was being renovated and they still managed to supply a feed fit for a King.
